TITLE: Peer Vocational Outreach Specialist

DESCRIPTION: Educate and provide outreach to seriously mentally ill individuals in the community about the benefits of obtaining employment and using WNYIL Work Support Program.


  1. Seek out mentally ill individuals in the community and encourage, educate and inform them about the benefits of obtaining employment.
  2. Work with individuals with mental illness seeking employment on assessing their goals, developing Independent Living Plans and creating a Person-Centered Plan.
  3. Do presentations to facilities that serve chronically mentally ill individuals on the benefits of employment, personal experience in seeking employment, and on the services available at the Job Club, relating to employment.
  4. Provide rapid employment techniques and skills needed to mental health recipients to assist them in finding employment.
  5. Provide peer counseling to recipients of mental health services to support them in finding and keeping employment.
  6. Facilitate weekly peer support self-help meeting regarding employment issues.
  7. Facilitate peer support self-help groups in the community.
  8. Provide mobility training and services in order to job hunt and attend initial employment opportunities.
  9. Assist in educating and developing an Advance Directive for those who wish to develop one.
  10. Participate in maintaining a neat, clean and safe work environment.
  11. Perform any other duties as deemed legally and ethically necessary by the supervisor.

SUPERVISION: Work under direct supervision of the Mental Health Peer Connection Assistant Director.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE: Must at all times perform in a professional, conscientious and efficient manner for the purpose of ensuring a better quality of life for persons with disabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Social Work, rehabilitation counseling, psychology, or related human services field, and one (1) year work or volunteer experience with people with mental illness; or a two (2) year degree in the above fields with two (2) years related work or volunteer experience with people with mental illness; or a high school diploma with four (4) years related work or volunteer experience with people with mental illness. Professional and life experience may be considered in lieu of, in full or part of academic credentials. Must have received New York Care Coordination Person Centered Planning training. Within 6 months of being hired, must be certified as a NYS Certified Peer Specialist/Provisional. Applicant must also be a current or former consumer of mental health services.

SALARY:  $25,500 - $30,500
